History: Super short summary first, then I'll flesh it out and make it awesome later.

The question of how a Chiss ends up on Dathomir doesn't have as complicated an answer as one might think. Two words: Ships crash. To be more precise, his parents' ship crashed. When the Dreaming River clan came to scavenge, they found a little boy. He looked to be at least ten, but was a good deal younger. Young enough to be worth taking.

So it was that the Chiss boy was taken to be raised by male slaves of the clan and given a new name. He doesn't remember his old name, and remembers little of his early childhood. He was happy enough with his clan, or at the very least he didn't know anything else. This was the universe. Men worked at tasks that were beneath the women. Men gave the women children. Sometimes clans raided each other, but Elhadron stayed with his own people for a very long time.

But then the Nightsisters raided, and that was a different story. More ruthless and vicious than any other clan could allow itself to be, the Nightsisters killed and looted their way through the clan outpost. The lone Chiss in the group of males caught their eye, and Elhadron was certain they were going to kill his mistress to get to him. Certainly she would never let any of her males fall into the Nightsisters' brutal hands while she yet lived.

Elhadron turned himself over to them, begging them to spare her life if he didn't make a fuss about it or try to run away. Whether it was a tactical decision or merely amusement at bargaining with a slave Elhadron never did find out. But they spared his mistress and took him along with a few others. In the eyes of his own clan, he'd saved a woman's life. That meant he was free. But the Nightsisters had no such reservations.

He stayed with them for nearly a standard year. A year of fear and pain, of cruelty and labor and subjugation. He largely forgot who he was during that time, his existence a desperate navigation between pain and despair, between fear and resignation. He did as he was told. He went where he was told with whomever came for him. It was his life.

Then, he was given the task of helping a few new additions to adjust to their new lives. They knew him. They called him a name he didn't recognize, but they were kind to him and convinced him that he could still come home. He had a vague notion of what "home" meant. Home was safety. People he knew. People who knew him.

The turning point came when the Nightsisters themselves were raided. Elhadron and many others fled, and were taken back to the clans. He returned to the Dreaming River clan to find that his sacrifice had not gone unnoticed or unappreciated. For saving his mistress' life at such great expense to himself, Elhadron was a free man.

He stayed a while, and found a job as an artisan in the village. He helped with pottery, paintings, decorations of temples. He had a knack for knowing just what would make anything he touched most beautiful, and finally he had the autonomy to make it happen. Many things were still closed to him, but several years of peace and work at least helped erase some of the old wounds left on his heart by the Nightsister clan that had possessed him.

Finally he took an opportunity to leave Dathomir, wanting to see what the wider universe was really like. He found that it was quite different than he expected.
